Just recently a new study from Icahn school of Medicine in New York has just been released and it has revealed that people who eat a plant based diet high in fruit and vegetables are 42% less likely to develop heart failure than those who consumed more meat and less plant based foods.

I Know what you may be asking, what is a plant based diet? and should I make the switch and stop eating meat?

A plant based diet consists of eating mainly fruit, vegetables, pulses, beans, nuts, seeds and whole grains. Cutting out meat and eating these can have a significant and positive impact on health.

1.Better Digestion

Plant foods are packed with soluble and insoluble fiber which supports a healthy digestive system and will maintain regularity. (Meat contains no dietary fiber at all). They also contain prebiotics which are non digestible fibers that help the good bacteria in the gut. Prebiotics are fermented by bacteria in the colon and this process contributes to a healthy environment throughout the digestive tract. Studies have recently shown that having a healthy gut is not only great for your digestive health but has also shown to help immunity and also mental health.

2.  Reduce The Risk Of Chronic Disease.

If you carry out any kind of Independent research you will find bucket loads of evidence showing that a plant based diet can reduce the risk of several chronic diseases including Type 2 diabetes and Cancer. A plant based diet lowers the risk to diabetes by improving how our cells respond to insulin and reduce insulin resistance which is the underlying issue that can cause the condition. Plant based foods can provide fiber, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants which can help protect our cells from damage that can lead to cancers. Consumption of plant based foods have been linked to protection against cancers of the mouth, esophagus, stomach and bowel. The biggest study on this and in fact the biggest study on diet was called the china study and it has been proven that doctors could actually turn on and off the growth of cancer cells by switching from a meat diet to a plant based diet . 3. A healthy Heart

Consumption of red and processed meat is the number 1 cause of heart disease due to the cholesterol content. Cholesterol is only found in meats. Research has suggested that a diet packed with plant foods can lower blood pressure and decrease the risk of heart disease. Vegetables, Beans, oats and barley are rich in soluble fibre which may help to lower blood cholesterol. Fruit and Veg are rich in antioxidants and the healthy monounsaturated fats  found in olive oils, seeds, nuts and avocados have been positively linked with greater heart health.

4.Weight Loss

Studies have shown that people who are on a plant based diet tend to have a lower BMI and a lower rate of obesity in both children and adults. Plant based diets tend to be low in calories and high in complex carbs, water and fibre which help you feel full for longer. By filling up on plants we can naturally feel fuller not leaving any space for the caloric dense processed foods that can come with health issues longer term.
